Session Leaders (Dalston)

Employer: Literacy Pirates  

Location: Dalston, Remote or Hybrid depending on need 

Temporary: Fixed Term rolling contract 

Working hours:  3pm-7pm 2-5 afternoons a week

Salary: £16 per hour

    • Balances a warm but structured approach that helps children have fun whilst staying safe and kind, with a positive approach to handling learning and behaviour

    • Passionate advocate for our Theory of Change and Pedagogy of reading for pleasure, everyone a writer and improving confidence and perseverance

    • Excited and curious about online delivery and using digital tools to improve outcomes for children

    • Communicates confidently with people from a range of different backgrounds, both one-to-one and in group settings

    • Models inclusion and values diversity

    • Motivated by improving outcomes for children with fewer opportunities

    • Thrives in a busy and changeable environment, calmly responding to curve balls such as tech issues or unexpected questions

    • Reflects on how things can improve, takes initiative to find solutions and identifies learnings from experience

    • Manages time well and can prioritise and get things done in a busy environment 

    Skills and Experience

    While certain experiences will be helpful, we are not looking for a specific set of experiences. Consider any experiences you have from work, study, volunteering or personal projects and how these might demonstrate you have the right attributes and the ability to learn and perform in the role. 

    Essential:

    • Experience leading groups of children in workshops, sessions or similar 

    Other relevant experience may include:

    • Experience of session content related to ours – for example literacy or learning content

    • Experience of delivering or supporting online learning

    • Experience of informal learning environments

    • Experience of the communities we work in

    • Experience of working with children with barriers to learning 

    Safeguarding Competencies

    As a Session Leader, you play a vital role in maintaining a safe environment for all Young Pirates. We are looking for candidates who: 

    • Demonstrate vigilance: Can maintain appropriate awareness of Young Pirates’ wellbeing and behaviour throughout sessions

    • Communicate concerns effectively: Feel confident raising safeguarding concerns promptly and appropriately with senior staff

    • Create a culture of safety: Can model and encourage good safeguarding practice amongst volunteers, making it clear that all concerns should be shared

    • Respond appropriately: Understand when and how to escalate concerns, following our safeguarding procedures

    • Lead by example: Can foster an environment where volunteers feel supported to raise any concerns about children’s safety or wellbeing 

    During your interview, we will discuss scenarios related to safeguarding to understand how you would respond to concerns and support your volunteer team in maintaining our high standards of child protection. 

    Role Description

    You will be working in the team to deliver daily reading and writing sessions to pupils in Years 5-8. Your timetable will include days when you lead session and days when you support session. 

    As Session Leader: 

    • Leading learning activities on our Virtual ship and/or in person in Hackney

    • Leading termly celebration events to launch Young Pirate products

    • Briefing and supporting volunteers (Crewmates) in session

    • Deliver monitoring and evaluation activities to check progress 

    As Session Support:

    • Greeting and registering Young Pirates

    • Completing session admin

    • In virtual sessions, leading on the smooth running of Zoom Class and troubleshooting tech issues with Young Pirates

    • Liaising with schools and families to ensure Young Pirates attend as many sessions as possible

    • Providing extra support to learning activities in session

    • Leading breaktime

    • Debriefing with volunteers and taking feedback and safeguarding concerns 

    Behaviour, wellbeing and safeguarding:

    • Creating a safe and joyful environment in session for all Young Pirates to thrive.

    • Implementing the behaviour, attendance and wellbeing processes including reporting and following up on concerns.

    • Follow the Safeguarding policy and uphold high standards of safeguarding in everything you do.

    • Follow the Equity Diversity and Inclusion to uphold high standards of inclusion in everything you do.

    Other activities to support the programme:

    • Engaging families with supportive communication about progress and behaviour.

    • Providing feedback on progress including writing teacher and family reports.

    • Striving to continually improve practice by taking part in Quality Assurance activities.

    • Representing the programme to visitors including teachers, funders and families.

    • Supporting the delivery of publishing projects.

    • Other activities to support the impactful running of the learning programme.
