Location: Colleagues attend the office at least four days per month (pro rata for part-time colleagues) to collaborate, build relationships, and support projects and decision-making. You can choose where to work the rest of the time. Travel to the office is a commute, so we pay our own travel costs. Additional in-person attendance will be required during your first few months for induction and training, to support you to learn the role and get to know colleagues.

Salary: £42,750 to £50,250

  • What the job involves

    This fixed-term role is a great opportunity for an experienced ER specialist who enjoys making things clearer, fairer and easier for managers and colleagues. We’re a big charity with a small well-managed ER caseload, so the focus is less on high-volume casework and more on strengthening the foundations that help people do their best work.

    You’ll lead improvements following a recent ER audit, making our policies, processes, guidance and reporting clearer, more consistent and easier to use. You’ll also support some complex ER casework, coach managers through sensitive situations, and help develop practical training content on investigations, grievances, disciplinary hearings and appeals.

    We’re looking for someone with strong ER experience, sound judgement and a supportive, inclusive approach. You’ll know how to balance fairness, compassion, consistency and organisational need, and you’ll be confident guiding managers through sensitive issues in a clear, calm and human way.

    You’ll enjoy improving policies and processes, creating practical tools, and using ER data to spot themes, risks and opportunities to learn. Above all, you’ll build trust quickly and help us maintain an open culture where people feel listened to, respected and treated with dignity.

    This role is in salary Band 4, with a starting salary of £42,750 to £50,250 per year. We aim to pay the median salary for charity the sector. Following 12 months of successful service, colleagues will move to the midpoint of the pay band. The midpoint salary for this role is £50,250.

    Our salaries reflect that the London office is our contractual place of work. We also pay a working-from-home allowance at the HMRC tax-free rate of £312 per year.

    We are committed to paying at least the London Living Wage for all roles and apply the updated rate each April.

    Extensive experience managing a wide range of employee relations casework in a complex and/or fast-paced environment, including grievances, dismissal appeals and investigations involving multiple parties and sensitive issues, with sound judgement on process, risk and fairness.

    Experience of handling complex investigations involving potential discrimination, with the cultural competence to manage issues sensitively and provide appropriate advice to managers hearing the case.

    Experience of writing and updating policies and guidance in line with employment law, regulation and best practice.

    Ability to develop practical training content for managers and work collaboratively with Learning and Development colleagues to build manager capability.

    Ability to improve approaches to ER reporting and record-keeping across casework, including performance improvement and flexible working requests.

    Excellent communication, interpersonal and coaching skills, with the ability to build trust, influence at all levels and explain complex information clearly.
