Communications & Campaigns Manager

Location: Predominantly remote working. Can be based anywhere in England and Wales, that is accessible for travel to Cardiff and Bradford, which is likely to be approximately once per month

Temporary: until 31 March 2029

Working hours: Part-time – 3 days per week

Salary: £37,150 - £38,500 pro-rata (0.6)

  • The Communications & Campaigns Manager will shape our public-facing communications, as well as lead on advocacy for the campaigning elements of our projects/activities.

    This involves delivering relevant communications campaigns that have a local, national and international impact to gain demonstrable public or targeted awareness of specific social injustices that our creative work shines a light on.

    By ‘campaigns’, we mean: elevating and amplifying our message and those of our collaborators (sometimes who are campaigners or activists); spreading the message of our work far and wide, in person and online, to make real change; and contributing to the continuation of Common/Wealth as a ‘movement’.

    You will (co-)manage our two part-time Communications Associates.

    We’re looking for someone with experience of and passion for calling-out injustices, inequality and oppression and maximising the existing work of our campaign partners.

    Advocacy

    •Helping to position Common/Wealth as a leading political theatre company in the UK: raising the profile of the company, including our mission and activism role, and contributing to ‘building the movement’

    • Maintaining balance and parity across two cities and two programmes of work

    • Researching and attending key relevant events across the UK, representing Common/Wealth and acting as a spokesperson where needed

    • Sharing the impacts of campaigns and our work including changes in policy or law

    Communications & Media

    • Telling the story of Common/Wealth and each project, the why and the how, including our processes and methodologies of making political theatre

    • Developing a company-wide strategic Communications Plan, in collaboration with the team and leading on delivery, including managing the development and production of assets, coordinating advertising and our digital strategy

    • Researching, developing and delivering thoughtful, robust and relevant communications campaigns that complement the creative/artistic work, alongside the Co-Directors and teams, that have a local, national and international reach, to gain demonstrable public/ targeted support

    • Leading on the scoping of a company rebrand and viability of commissioning a new website

    • Authoring and editing high-quality copy

    • Overseeing communications and media work and ensuring appropriate sign-off for Common/Wealth’s public communications and media work, to manage reputational risk, ensure quality control and brand compliance

    • Leading on company-wide and major projects press/PR, and liaising with external specialists in this area

    • Supporting the Communications Associates with project related press/PR campaigns

    • Sourcing and coordinating PR/media training for our teams, and creating communications risk assessments

    Research & liaison with collaborators

    • Researching and developing relationships with potential campaign partners, and maintaining relationships with existing campaign partners alongside our creative teams

    • Identifying additional effective partnerships where appropriate to maximise our impact

    Audience Development

    • Alongside others, introducing new audiences to Common/Wealth’s work, including targeting audiences (public, politicians, policy makers amongst others)

    • Developing assets that support audiences who are motivated to take action

    • Building our educational offer to schools, colleges and universities

    • Supporting the development of international audiences for our work

    Organisational Management & Development

    • Co-line managing two part-time Communication Associates (one in Bradford, one in Cardiff), supervising communications activities including assets, newsletters, social media, our website, resources and publications to deliver powerful advocacy messages

    • Line managing relevant freelance roles

    • Using data to accurately inform the development of campaigns

    • Alongside others, ensuring the consistent application of Common/Wealth’s policies and procedures, with a focus on effective performance management, staff development and well-being

    • Managing the Communications budget

    • Supporting monitoring and evaluation of our communications and campaigns work including contributing to grant management and impact reporting

    • Contributing ideas to support the organisation to expand our work and reach, occasionally including funding applications

    • Carrying out any other duties commensurate with the role 

    PERSON SPECIFICATION

    Essential criteria:

    Skills & Experience

    • Demonstrable understanding of social injustices facing particularly working-class/intersectional communities in the UK and awareness of comparable international injustices

    • 3 or more years’ proven experience developing and delivering successful advocacy/communications campaigns

    • An understanding of ‘campaigning’

    • Proven leadership of communications/advocacy campaigns with measurable outcomes, contributing to organisational success

    • Experience of representing organisations

    • Experience of leading on successful press/PR campaigns for projects

    • Excellent English language and copy-editing skills with the ability to ensure the delivery of powerful content for a wide range of audiences

    • Strong visual aesthetic

    • Good collaborative skills, with an ability to lead crossorganisational initiatives, working with people across a wide range of functions and perspectives

    • Experience of managing projects and managing/ monitoring budgets

    • Experience of line management, with the ability to motivate and inspire others

    • Experience of using digital platforms to contribute to advocacy/communications campaigns

    • Experience of collating and analysing data

    • An organised self-starter, with attention to detail and comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy, and self-administrating

    • A willingness to travel in the UK for collaborative working in person, and to support project campaigns
