We are looking for a Maths Education Support Lead to join us at MEI to work as an NCETM Assistant Director for Secondary Mathematics.
MEI is a key delivery partner with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), promoting high-quality teaching of mathematics from Early Years through to post-16, primarily through its support of the Maths Hubs.
The NCETM Assistant Director for Secondary Mathematics role will provide credible and nationally recognised specialist secondary mathematics professional development expertise to enhance the work of the NCETM and to provide expert support for the Maths Hubs programme.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Representing the NCETM in national and regional settings, as deployed by the NCETM Director for Secondary Mathematics.
Maintaining awareness and knowledge of current developments in mathematics education policy, research and practice relevant to your role, ensuring these developments are effectively shared with colleagues and incorporated as appropriate into wider strategic and operational plans.
Compiling written reports, including evaluation of key projects, communication of information to the DfE, and internal communication within the NCETM and the Maths Hubs.
Coordinating and managing collaborative national development work in secondary school mathematics education that supports the Maths Hubs in key dimensions of their work, in particular managing the development and implementation of a programme that prepares schools to join the Teaching for Mastery programme.
Contributing to the development and compilation of resources to support the secondary sector in teaching for mastery.
Coordinating the development of associated programmes and resources.
Working with Project Coordination Teams of Maths Hub Leads on Network Collaborative Projects to develop activities and approaches that can support the work of Maths Hubs.
Planning and leading workshops during the National Maths Hubs Forums.
Contributing to the overall profile, development and evaluation of the NCETM, including participation in NCETM whole team meetings and contribution to or writing reports. Liaising, meeting and communicating with MEI colleagues in the development and management of MEI’s planning and its work. Meeting MEI’s requirements for safeguarding, quality management, health and safety, other legal requirements, and environmental policies.
Key Relationships
In this role, the post holder will establish and maintain key relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, both internal and external to MEI.
Internally, the post holder will collaborate closely with their line manager to ensure alignment on project goals and MEI’s objectives. Additionally, the post holder will work with the NCETM Director for Secondary Mathematics in forming strategic relationships with key national partners to engage them in supporting the Maths Hubs Programme.
Building strong partnerships with stakeholders is essential for the effective delivery of projects and the advancement of MEI’s strategic goals.

A passion for mathematics and mathematics teaching.
An undergraduate degree in a mathematical or quantitative subject.
Qualified Teacher Status.
Five or more years of direct experience of teaching secondary mathematics.
A deep subject knowledge and understanding of mathematics teaching for mastery in secondary schools.
Experience of leadership and management in a mathematics education context.
Experience in developing and delivering professional development for secondary mathematics teachers.
A strong understanding of the current education policy landscape.
Proven experience of raising standards in a secondary educational environment.
The ability to think creatively and recognise opportunities.
The ability to inspire others.
Good team-working skills and the willingness to work as part of a team.
High levels of self-motivation and well-developed time management skills.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Willingness to travel around the country on a regular basis, with nights away from home.
The ability to work in a way that promotes the safety and wellbeing of children and young people.
An appreciation of MEI’s work and philosophy.
Direct, successful experience of mathematics teaching for mastery in a secondary school.
Experience and a track record of supporting key developments in secondary mathematics education in England.
Substantial senior management experience in an educational environment.
Additional Information
There will be a two-stage interview process. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an online interview on Monday 30th March 2026, comprising a five-minute presentation to the interview panel followed by a series of competency-based interview questions. Successful candidates from the online interviews will then be invited to a second interview which will be held in-person on Wednesday 1st April 2026 at a venue in Central London.
