Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Communications and Fundraising is responsible for strengthening the charity’s profile, embedding marketing and digital excellence across all areas of work and driving income generation.
They leads all aspects of the Bikeability Trust’s communications to advance its mission, strengthen its reputation, and deepen engagement with donors, partners, beneficiaries, and the broader community. This role ensures that the Bikeability Trust’s story is told with clarity, purpose, and heart. The director works closely with the executive team to align messaging with strategic goals and to amplify the organisation’s impact.
They will be responsible for the day to day operational scrutiny and reporting in order to meet the Bikeability Trust’s mission, contractual and legal obligations. This role is critical in the leadership of the Bikeability Trust as deputising for the CEO.
The Bikeability Trust’s purpose is to ensure that all cycle training is delivered to a gold standard, inspiring everyone to cycle with competence and confidence.

· Expert: The Trust has successfully administered the Bikeability programme on behalf of government since 2018, delivering high-quality delivery guides and instructor training, and our workforce has thousands of years combined experience teaching people to cycle.

· Quality focussed: Our instructors deliver high-quality, consistent and standardised cycle training. We aim to ensure that every rider achieves the same outcomes to the same standard, taking into account their individual capabilities, including special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
· Inclusive: We take action to reduce barriers to participation, support underrepresented groups and ensure that anyone who wishes to access Bikeability cycle training is able to do so, and cycling is seen as an activity for all.
· Efficient: Our delivery programme offers value for money and is delivered in an economic, proportional and efficient way.
· Influential: We share our evidence of the impact of cycle training across a variety of sectors (transport, education, environment, health, leisure, etc) and work collaboratively with stakeholders, partners and commercial organisations to achieve our vision and influence behaviour change.
Key accountabilities:
Leadership
· As a member of the Executive Team, provide effective leadership, supporting the Chief Executive in delivering the charity’s aims and driving an inclusive culture
· Play a key role in developing and delivering long-term strategy for the Trust, including developing integrated planning and budgeting across the Executive Team
· Maintain a strong relationship and engaging with the Executive Team on the day to day operations of the Bikeability Trust
• Create and deliver a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with Bikeability Trust mission and strategy goals
• Ensure fundraising and communications strategies are integrated across the organisation, supporting programme growth, brand visibility and stakeholder engagement
Provide leadership and management to the Strategy team:
o Communications team (Head of Marketing and Communications, Communications Manager, Media Officer, Communications Officer and Communications Assistant)
o Research & Insights Lead
o Fundraising team (Corporate Partnerships Manager, Fundraising and Events Officer)
External Communications
Lead corporate and senior stakeholder communications at a strategic level to ensure strong positioning, build reputation, and deepen key relationships, supporting the Chief Executive as needed
Ensure that the communications team deliver through the communications strategy:
· Mission driven storytelling: Highlight the real-world impact of cycle training through learner stories, school partnerships, and community outcomes.
· Media and public relations: Build relationships with local and national media, pitch stories, thought leadership and insight about cycling safety and active travel, and respond to press enquiries.
· Digital and social media leadership: Oversee content that engages parents, schools, instructors, and supporters; grow awareness of training opportunities and success stories.
· Website and content strategy: Ensure accessible, inspiring, and up to date information about programmes, resources, and impact.
· Brand stewardship: Maintain a consistent, positive public identity that reflects the charity’s values and commitment to safe cycling.
Internal Communications
· Bikeability Trust internal communications: Keep teams informed and motivated, sharing updates, resources, and engagement across the Trust staff
· Stakeholder communications: ensure a high quality, impactful communications programme for Bikeability stakeholders including partners, instructors, training providers and grant
Fundraising
• Develop and lead the implementation of a dynamic fundraising strategy that builds on Bikeability Trust strengths, tests propositions and innovation, develops long term sustainable income and ensures strong diversification across income streams
• Monitor and analyse income sources, evaluating performance against targets and adapting strategy to maximise impact and financial resilience
• Lead and develop the Trust’s approach to high value relationship development working with senior stakeholders and supporting the Fundraising team to build long term relationships that drive income growth
Impact and Reporting
· Support reporting on progress towards the Bikeability Trust strategy with the Board of Trustees through annual business plans and corporate dashboard, gathering evidence and analysis from across the Bikeability Trust
· Ensure monthly and quarterly impact and KPI reporting to fulfil Active Travel England, TfL and other funders reporting requirements are met
· Deliver high quality information, governance, and business insights to the CEO and Board to inform decision-making
HR and Governance
· Maintain HR function jointly with the CEO across Bikeability with a focus on developing talent, succession planning, performance and appraisals systems. Seek input from external suppliers as required on HR
· Develop leadership and management capability across the Trust
General Duties
· Provide support and leadership insight across the organisation
· To undertake other related tasks as directed by the CEO or Board of Trustees
· Ensure all systems and procedures are in line with best practice and relevant legislation including GDPR.
· Recognise the need to be flexible when working for a small organisation and carry out other duties that may be required
Person specification
The successful applicants will have:
Experience
• Proven success in leading communications at a strategic level, with at least five years of experience in corporate communications, media, PR or marketing
• Experience working across different funding streams, with a track record of supporting teams to secure and maintaining major multi-year gifts and partnerships
• A track record of leading a high performing and impactful team to deliver income growth
• Charity Governance experience at a senior level
Qualifications and Skills
· A first or higher degree
· Excellent organisational and customer care skills
· Strong written and oral communication skills
· Have a growth and continuous improvement mindset
· Ability to use Microsoft 365 packages including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams and working knowledge of CRM systems and digital fundraising platforms
· Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently
