Your future team:
Our team operates at the heart of Jisc’s core internet services, ensuring reliable and secure connectivity for universities and colleges across the UK. We manage and deliver critical Domain Name System (DNS) services, including public-facing DNS hosting and resolution, which translate complex computer language into human-readable addresses. Handling over 1 billion DNS queries every week, we provide the essential infrastructure that keeps academic institutions online and connected.
As custodians of these foundational services we work closely with teams such as Cyber Threat Intelligence, DDoS Protection, and the Network Operations Centre (NOC) to deliver resilience, scalability, and innovation services - maintaining DNS resolvers, hosting authoritative DNS records, and safeguarding the integrity of internet operations for the education sector.
Externally, we collaborate with other National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) to share expertise and develop best practices across the global research community. Joining this team means joining both an internal and global community working on high-impact systems that underpin research, learning, and collaboration.
Internally, we’re known for being a highly skilled, core engineering team with deep technical knowledge. We’re always learning, sharing ideas, and continually improving the systems we run. This is an excellent environment for anyone who enjoys complex technical challenges and wants to make a meaningful impact on national-scale academic infrastructure.
A Day in the Life of a Digital & Technology Apprentice – Architecture & Engineering Team at Jisc
No two days are the same, but the role combines hands-on technical problem-solving with learning opportunities that build toward managing critical national infrastructure. Day-to-day, you’ll assist with monitoring, threat detection, reporting, and analysis of core infrastructure and associated services.
From troubleshooting technical issues and handling support tickets to learning how to build and replicate live systems, you’ll gain hands-on experience with the technologies that keep our network secure and operational. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the skills and confidence to manage critical systems independently.
This is a snapshot of your typical day, but may vary depending on requirements:
Morning:
Start the day by checking the helpdesk queue and prioritising tickets. These range from quick fixes—like helping a college update public-facing DNS records—to more complex issues, such as diagnosing why a university domain isn’t resolving correctly. On average, you’ll handle around five tickets a day, each requiring a mix of technical knowledge and customer communication.Midday:
Dive into troubleshooting and supporting Jisc’s core services. This could involve working on DNS configurations or assisting with network time services, which ensure Janet Network users stay synchronized globally. You’ll learn how Jisc operates as an official time provider, a critical function for universities and research institutions.Afternoon:
Depending on your stage in the apprenticeship, you might work on infrastructure builds—starting with creating replicas of live systems to understand architecture and gain hands-on experience. Later, you’ll use these replicas to recreate and resolve real-world customer issues, deepening your technical expertise.Long-Term Development:
As you progress, you’ll gain the skills and confidence to manage critical national infrastructure independently. By the end of the apprenticeship, you’ll be equipped to run complex systems unsupervised, ensuring resilience and reliability for Jisc’s customers.Who we’re looking for:
Some experience in using various operating systems
Ability to plan, prioritise and manage resources within a collaborative team-based environment
Experience with scripting languages, such as Bash or Python for automation
Understanding of DNS or NTP and their uses on the Internet
Ability to write clear, concise documentation
Ability to anticipate change and adapt to new situations
Ability to work independently and as part of a team to identify and propose improvements and solve potential problems
High level of personal integrity, as well as the ability to handle confidential matters, and show an appropriate level of judgement and maturity
It’s a bonus if you have:
Networking experience desirable
Knowledgeable in Linux or Windows administration.
Interested in promoting security best practice
Understanding of security threats
Understanding of an incident response process
Understanding of network monitoring and investigations
