Location: This is a remote role, with occasional travel to London (approx. every two months) for team meetings or Fawcett events (travel costs covered).

Working hours: 30 hours per week. Full -time hours at Fawcett are 37.5 hours per week.

Salary: £36,000 –£40,000 per annum (FTE), pro rata ~£28,800 –32,000 actual.

    Purpose of the Role

    This new role will strengthen Fawcett’s grassreminist movement by supporting and growing our communities of activists and allies. Local groups will always be the foundation of this work —the first priority and an enduring focus — but the role also l ooks ahead, creating new ways for people to connect, collaborate, and campaign together.

    The Community Builder will ensure grassroots activists are well supported and engaged, develop consistent pathways for new groups and participants, and help link local action with Fawcett’s national campaigns. They will also take responsibility for ensurin g community activity is underpinned by clear processes, agreements, and compliance with relevant standards, building sustainable infrastructure that strengthens Fawcett’s management of groups over the long term.

    This is a manager -level post, expected to work with autonomy and initiative now, with scope to grow into line management as our campaigning capacity expands.

    Key Responsibilities

    Movement Building & Local Group Support

    • Ensure Fawcett’s local groups are consistently supported, informed, and engaged, building strong and sustainable relationships with group leader and acitivists.

    • Create clear and accessible processes for setting up new groups, joining existing ones, or exploring other ways to get involved.

    • Support people to grow their skills, confidence, and activism —creating clear pathways for individuals to take on greater roles in advancing gender equality.

    • Develop, test, and adapt resources, practices, and engagement methods to meet groups’ evolving needs —ensuring they are based on evidence and insight, not assumptions, and that time is invested in work which adds real value.

    Community Growth Beyond Local Groups

    • Explore opportunities for new forms of feminist community building, such as special interest groups, thematic networks, or digital platforms.

    • Scope and assess potential tools or models for community connection and collaboration, making evidence -based recommendations.

    Compliance, Risk & Sustainability

    • Own and maintain Fawcett’s Local Groups Agreement as a core organisational product, ensuring it is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect compliance with all relevant standards (including charity law, data protection, and fundraising practice) and conti nues to be fit for purpose.

    • Maintain oversight of group -related risks (e.g. online presence, governance, fundraising) through a risk register or equivalent, escalating issues where needed.

    • Ensure that systems, processes, and protocols are robust, documented, and embedded across the organisation, so that management of local groups is clear, consistent, and sustainable over time.

    Digital Engagement & Tools

    • Lead on reviewing and scoping digital tools and practices that could enhance inclusive, participatory organising.

    • Share knowledge and recommendations with the wider team, encouraging creative and innovative engagement methods. Campaigns & Advocacy

    • Connect grassroots activism with Fawcett’s national campaigns and policy work, ensuring local voices inform evidence, advocacy, and consultation responses.

    • Collaborate with colleagues across campaigns, communications, and membership to ensure community building strengthens Fawcett’s overall impact.

    Membership Growth

    • Contribute to the growth and retention of Fawcett’s formal membership, as part of our member -powered ethos.

    • Ensure community building and grassroots activity engage both members and wider activists, deepening their involvement in the movement.

    Year One Priorities (indicative)

    • Establish a consistent and trusted support framework for existing local groups, so leaders and activists feel informed, connected, and valued.

    • Review and update the Local Groups Agreement with compliance and risk management in mind, and take ownership of its ongoing oversight.

    • Develop clear induction and joining processes for new groups and participants.

    • Scope and assess digital tools and practices that could strengthen grassroots organising, producing recommendations for future use.

    • Create opportunities for grassroots insights to shape national campaigns.

    • Put in place durable systems (e.g. agreements, registers, protocols) that strengthen Fawcett’s long -term management of groups.

    • Find opportunities to bring our local groups together, encouraging peer to peer support.

    Person Specification

    Essential

    • Demonstrable experience in one of: grassroots organising, community building, volunteer management, or local activism/campaigns.

    • Strong understanding of feminist activism, movement -building, and inclusive leadership.

    • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and take initiative in shaping new approaches.

    • Digital literacy and curiosity, with experience of using or assessing collaborative online tools.

    • Excellent communication skills, able to inspire and support activists and volunteers.

    • Commitment to Fawcett’s mission and values, and to anti -racist and intersectional feminist practice.

    • Awareness of compliance and risk considerations in grassroots or volunteer activity, and ability to take responsibility for ensuring these are addressed.

    • Commitment to continuous professional development, including self -directed learning and reflection on practice, alongside organisational investment in growth.

    Desirable

    • Experience linking grassroots activism and embedding diverse voices into national policy and campaigns .

    • Experience designing or delivering activist training, resources, or support frameworks.

    • Experience working in a membership -based organisation.

    • Interest and readiness to grow into a line management role in future.
