Welsh transport campaigner
● Part-time employed position, permanent position
● 2 days (14 hours) a week, spread throughout the week
● £37,674 pro rata
● Home-based with occasional London meetings
Transport Action Network - the campaigning body supporting communities seeking more sustainable transport investment and less spending on bigger or new roads - is seeking a Welsh transport campaigner to manage our relationship with new and existing Senedd members, local and regional decision-makers, civil servants, and other senior politicians, along with our digital communications and media relations in Wales. This is to promote awareness and support for sustainable transport policies and initiatives such as 20mph speed limits and the sustainable transport decision-making hierarchy, alongside greater investment in public transport and active travel by switching funding from road building. For example, funding for the new stations and services across South East Wales as recommended by Lord Burns, and Network North Wales. You will provide support and an evidence-base for the new Welsh Government to continue the previous administration’s position on new road building, where it is effectively considered an option of last resort after less damaging interventions have been explored first. Roads maintenance remains the biggest priority for the Welsh roads network.
You will network with other NGOs and local campaign groups and campaigners especially, but not exclusively, in Wales, to build a wider network that can continue to promote a sustainable transport agenda. Where appropriate, joint working and traditional media work will also be required.
You will need to be passionate about sustainability and will have good experience across the communications mix including digital, social media and PR, and be good at networking.
Job description
Your duties will include:
● Producing written and visual content for use by TAN Cymru on its communications platforms
● Managing the Transport Action Network Cymru X and Bluesky accounts and other social media accounts
● Building networks and alliances with other NGOs and activist groups, to increase knowledge of and interest in Welsh transport policy
● Helping develop government policy through engaging with new and existing Senedd members, civil servants, regional and local decision-makers, and other senior politicians
● Developing TAN Cymru’s own specific policy positions as appropriate
● Identifying threats to progressive transport policies achieved under the previous administration and campaigning to protect them using an evidence based and effective strategy.
● Promoting greater investment in active travel and public transport
● Growing and maintaining a Welsh database of members, supporters and communities, and stakeholders and creating e-newsletters as required
● Planning proactive media stories, writing press releases and liaising with journalists
● Responding to email enquiries from the public, and supporting local campaigners
● Other occasional communications duties may include producing printed materials and running fundraising appeals
● General administrative duties, including reporting to TAN’s funders
Flexible working is expected, to suit work requirements and personal circumstances, but averaging 2 days (14 hours) a week throughout the week. You will be home-based but will need to travel to London and occasionally elsewhere for meetings. Expenses will be paid for travel.
