Overview of this Role
The Carbon Calculator Product Owner at Farm Carbon Toolkit (FCT) leads the strategic development, feature roadmap, and user experience of FCT’s flagship Farm Carbon Calculator.
Operating at the intersection of software development, agricultural science, and user-centric design, this role ensures the calculator remains the UK’s most trusted, intuitive, and scientifically robust software for measuring whole-farm greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and carbon sequestration.

Key Responsibilities
Managing the Calculator:
● Managing the development of the Calculator to incorporate new integrations and features, and ensure it is technically robust, accessible and easy to use.
● Ensure the Calculator sits at the forefront of how we measure, understand and communicate farm-related GHG emissions and carbon sequestration on farms.
● Continue to align the Calculator with recognised standards and verification processes to maintain the integrity and purpose of the calculator as a product.
● Lead work to maintain and enhance user privacy and cyber security.
● Work to harmonise the Calculator with other Farm Carbon Calculators.
● Ensure ongoing development of the Calculator to provide helpful benchmark data for users and more widely.
● Set research priorities for emissions factors and undertake/oversee the delivery of those factors.
● Provide thought leadership on ethical and scientifically robust Carbon Accounting practices.
Calculator maintenance and user support:
● Balance and prioritise new development needs relative to product maintenance and bug fixing.
● Work with our team, software developers and other project partners to deliver our continually evolving Carbon Calculator engine API and Farm Carbon Calculator.
● Oversee research and development to improve the calculation methodologies and data sources used within the Farm Carbon Calculator.
● Ensure that useful and accessible online resources for the Calculator are in place, including clear guidance, methodology details and frequently asked questions.
● Responsible for agreeing the Calculator budget, including use of subcontractors.
Stakeholder and team engagement:
● Present updates and Calculator priorities to staff, directors and – subject to capacity –
external audiences, when required.
● Communicate software developments internally and to key stakeholders.
Business and partnership development:
● Work in collaboration with the Software Commercial Lead to ensure that all proposed projects & partnerships can be delivered – and proposing costs associated with any software development needs to meet deliverable requirements.
● Deliver on selected projects relevant to future Calculator development.
● Support bid development and proposal writing as relevant.

Knowledge, experience and capabilities

Knowledge and experience:
● Up-to-date knowledge of, and experience of GHG footprinting methodologies, accounting protocols and standards, carbon calculators and data modelling, particularly in relation to agriculture. (E)
● Experience of research processes and procedures. (E)
● Good understanding and knowledge of farming systems. Previous experience working with farmers or a farming background is desirable. (D)
● Awareness of “agile” approach to software development and experience of code languages such as R with R studio, html, python, java or PHP. (D)
● Proven Project Management experience and/or experience as a Product Manager. (E)
● A high level of IT competency is expected, especially with spreadsheets and typical professional software (e.g. G-suite, Microsoft, Zoom etc). (E)
