  • About Jisc:

For 30 years Jisc has pioneered digital solutions for UK education and research, transforming how knowledge is created, shared and used.

We are uniquely positioned to protect, promote and lead the sector in digital and data transformation, making a difference to students, communities and society. Together, we are

working to build a better digital future for education and research.

Raise your potential through our culture of lifelong learning. At Jisc, we're all about growth, so embrace new challenges, sharpen your skills and shape a career that excites you.

    The role:

As a Software Developer at Jisc, you’ll grow your career through our structured skills framework, which provides clear role-based progression linked to transparent, pre-agreed criteria. The framework sets out the behaviours, capabilities, and technical skills expected in the role, giving you clarity on how to develop and demonstrate your expertise. Progression is measured consistently and fairly against these criteria, ensuring your development is recognised in a clear and supportive way.

We’re looking for a Junior Developer who is ready to build on their foundational programming skills and grow within our structured skills framework. You’ll be able to write clean, maintainable code under guidance, contribute to project tasks, and show a clear willingness to learn and develop your capabilities. Collaboration, openness to feedback, and a developing understanding of software development processes and best practices are key, along with the motivation to progress against transparent, pre‑agreed criteria as you build your expertise.

    What you’ll be doing:

    • Developing high‑quality, secure, and maintainable software that supports Jisc’s services.

    • Working across the full software development lifecycle, planning, designing, coding, testing, documenting, and releasing features.

    • Collaborating with product owners, users, and team members to understand requirements and translate them into clear development tasks.

    • Participating in Agile ceremonies, pair programming, peer reviews, and collaborative problem‑solving sessions.

    • Writing automated tests and contributing to testing activities and release cycles.

    • Designing and building RESTful APIs and working with relational or document databases.

    • Applying Jisc policies, coding standards, and best practices

    • Staying flexible and contributing across different projects as organisational priorities evolve.

    What we are looking for:

    • Experience working in a software development environment.

    • Ability to write clean, readable code and deliver complete solutions to typical development tasks.

    • Ideally knowledge of C# and/or Typescript, React, SQL, GitHub, and Azure DevOps or AWS, though good knowledge of modern software development languages and practises and a willingness to learn is more important than specific technologies.

    • Understanding of RESTful API design, automated testing, and secure coding practices.

    • Familiarity with source control tools and version‑control workflows.

    • Strong communication skills and the ability to understand stakeholder needs.

    • A collaborative mindset, contributing positively in meetings, supporting teammates, and engaging in pair programming and peer reviews.

    • Curiosity, willingness to learn, and openness to new technologies and approaches.

    • A commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive team culture.

    Don’t meet every single requirement?

We know that sometimes people can be put off applying for a job if they think they can’t tick every box, so we encourage you to apply even if you do not meet 100% of the requirements, but you feel this role is perfect for you. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles!

    Hybrid working:

Specific patterns for working in the office are not mandated, and the frequency of time worked in the office is agreed with your manager. Meeting in person is something we value so you may need to travel on occasion to any of our hub offices.
