Start Date: September 2026
Initial Duration: 5 months (12 hours over 3 days a week), with scope to extend
Time commitment: Approximately 12 hours a week

Oak National Academy is looking to engage an experienced freelance finance administration specialist to provide temporary support across a range of finance administration processes.
The focus of this engagement is to help ensure that key finance administration activities are delivered accurately, efficiently and in a timely manner during a period of increased workload and capacity pressure within the finance team.
The appointed freelancer will bring their own expertise and approach to delivering the agreed services, working to agreed priorities and timelines while liaising with relevant Oak colleagues as required.
This is a remote engagement with flexible working arrangements.
The successful applicant must pass a BPSS check via the Department for Education. BPSS is the UK Government's standard pre-employment security check. It involves confirming your identity, right to work in the UK, employment history and any unspent criminal convictions. If you're offered the role, we'll guide you through the process and let you know what information you'll need to provide.
Scope of work
The freelancer will be responsible for delivering the following outcomes:
Effective management of agreed finance administration workflows, including finance inbox management, purchase order administration and supplier/vendor record maintenance.
Accurate processing and maintenance of financial records and supporting documentation in accordance with agreed processes.
Timely processing of supplier invoices and routine finance transactions.
Support for agreed reconciliation and finance administration activities associated with month-end processes.
Timely response to and resolution of finance administration queries received through agreed finance channels, escalating matters where appropriate.
Identification of opportunities to improve the efficiency, accuracy and effectiveness of finance administration processes.
Maintenance of appropriate standards of confidentiality, professionalism and accuracy when handling financial information and business transactions.
Provision of regular updates on progress, priorities and any issues requiring escalation.
Experience and expertise
We are interested in hearing from freelancers who can demonstrate:
Experience providing finance administration, accounts payable, bookkeeping or similar finance support services.
Experience in processing supplier invoices, maintaining supplier records and supporting routine finance operations.
Experience responding to finance-related queries and working with established financial processes and controls.
Experience using finance systems such as Dynamics 365 Business Central, Xero, QuickBooks or similar platforms.
Strong organisational skills and excellent attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities effectively.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
A practical, solutions-focused approach and willingness to identify opportunities for process improvement.
Confidence working remotely and collaborating effectively with stakeholders in a distributed organisation.
Ways of working
This engagement is offered on a self-employed basis. The appointed freelancer will have autonomy over how the work is delivered, working to agreed outcomes and timelines.
You will liaise with a named Oak contact to ensure alignment, share progress, and agree priorities across the engagement period.
The engagement is intended to provide finance administration support services and should not be interpreted as creating an employment relationship between Oak National Academy and the appointed freelancer.
Next steps
You’ll answer a few admin questions and some questions related to day-to-day finance tasks. Your answers will go through our sift process: all answers will be anonymised, randomised, and then reviewed by a panel of reviewers (real humans), so it's your thinking that gets assessed, not your CV.
If shortlisted, we'll invite you to a remote interview over Zoom.
We're receiving a strong response to our freelancer adverts, which may lead us to close the role early so if you're considering applying, please get your application in early to avoid missing out.
