    We are looking for an experienced and passionate Advice and Information Officer to work as part of our Advice and Information Team.

    The Rethink Mental Illness Advice and Information Service exists to create an improved quality of life for all those severely affected by mental illness. The service is national, supporting people across England.

    The team deliver in depth, holistic advice on a range of issues including the Mental Health Act, social care, welfare benefits and medication. The team also write and review our information resources; over 100 factsheets and webpages accredited with the Patient Information Standard (PIF).

    We provide advice and information via our helpline, e-mail and webchat and our clients include people living with a mental illness as well as their carers, friends, and relatives.

    The service provides a central role within the charity working closely with colleagues in Fundraising, Communications and Campaigns, and Policy to offer expert input. Beyond the positive impact we have for those individuals we support directly; our overreaching aim is to use the knowledge and experience gained from advice work to improve mental health policies and practices in the longer term so we can improve the lives of all people affected by mental illness.

    How you will make a difference

    I will improve the quality of life for individuals affected by severe mental illness by:

    • Providing accurate, empathetic, non-judgemental, holistic advice by phone, webchat and occasional letter and e-mail.

    • Reviewing and producing written information for our website and partnership working on a wide range of mental health topics such as treatment and care, the Mental Health Act, the Equality Act, the Care Act, medication, welfare benefits, and carers’ rights. 

    I empower, encourage and equip people affected by mental illness to make proactive steps to resolve issues that are most important to them by:

    • Actively listening to their concerns, ensuring they feel heard and understood.

    • Enhancing their understanding of their situation and available options.

    • Increasing their awareness of their rights.

    • Offering advice, support and resources available to them.

    • Helping them to action plan.

    I will work with the following people and teams:

    • The Advice and Information Team (RAIS) consisting of: The Head of Advice and Information, RAIS Service manager, Information Lead, Team Leader, Volunteer & Community Engagement Lead, Advice & Information officers and RAIS volunteers.

    Other Rethink Mental Illness and Mental Health UK teams as needed e.g. Policy & Practice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Involvement, Communications, National Programmes, Operations.
