What Does a Bookkeeper Do?

Bookkeepers keep businesses running smoothly behind the scenes. Day to day, that might include:

  • Recording and organising financial transactions

  • Managing invoices, bills and bank reconciliations

  • Preparing VAT returns

  • Providing clear financial information to business owners and accountants

It’s a role that combines attention to detail with real impact. Many bookkeepers enjoy building trusted relationships with the people they support.

A Career with Choice and Flexibility

One of the biggest attractions of bookkeeping is how adaptable it is. Qualified bookkeepers can:

  • Work from home or on a hybrid basis

  • Be employed by a business or accountancy practice

  • Set up their own bookkeeping practice

  • Choose hours that fit around family or other commitments

As more businesses rely on accurate, up-to-date financial information, skilled bookkeepers continue to be in demand.

How You Qualify as a Bookkeeper

You don’t need prior experience in finance to get started. By studying an ICB-recognised bookkeeping qualification, you’ll build practical skills step by step, with learning designed to reflect real working situations.
